SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY LAW CENTER
Baton Rouge, Louisiana  70813

Dear International Student:

Please indicate your tentative course selection now, by name and course number.  Email this information to our registrar, Esimmons@sulc.edu.

All students, regardless of the courses they take, may make the same optional side-trip to the various international courts at the Hague.

For your 8:30 a.m. class, you should now choose between:

European Law Course number 808
International Criminal Law Course number 805

Both International Criminal Law and European Law promise to be interesting.  European Law is recommended for those who plan to work for a large law firm and will be a very useful choice for those with an interest in business/commercial/trade matters.  The course is about the structure of the European Union (which is rapidly overtaking the United States in many areas, including human rights).  The course includes the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice, human rights in Europe, and the operation of the common market, including free movement of workers, goods, services and capital.  International Criminal Law, on the other hand, is about bringing persons to justice for ethnic cleansing and terrorism.  This course is recommended for those with a focus on criminal law.

If you choose European law, you will purchase two very moderately priced paperbacks on arrival in London (one a textbook about the size of a nutshell, the other a paperback containing some statutes you can refer to).  If you choose International Criminal Law, you will need to purchase both your casebook and your documents supplement in the United States before you leave.

Please see the course descriptions available on the details page (scroll down to courses).  Faculty information is also available on the same web page (scroll down to faculty).

For your 10:30 a.m. class, you should now choose between:

Private International Law Course number 806
Comparative Constitutional Law Course number 807

You will need to purchase your books for Private International Law or Comparative Constitutional Law in the United States before you leave.

Again, please read the course descriptions available on the details page (scroll down to courses).  Faculty information is also available on the same web page (scroll down to faculty).

As stated, European Law will be taught out of two reasonably-priced paperbacks published in England.  You will purchase books for this one course after you arrive in London.  The other three courses (International Criminal Law, Comparative Constitutional Law, Private International Law) are taught out of hardcover books published in the United States and not available in England.  See the syllabi for those courses and obtain your books before you leave the US.  One option is to purchase them in person from Claitor's Law Books, 3165 South Acadian Thruway, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70808-2902, or by mail from Claitor's Law Books, Post Office Box 261333, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70826-1333.  Claitor's telephone numbers are (800) 274-1403 and (225) 344-0476.  http://www.claitors.com

Select your courses both by course name and by course number now, by sending an email to our registrar, Elaine Simmons, Esimmons@sulc.edu.  Please be sure to include your own name!

See you in London!

Sincerely,

M. R. Franks
